Hafod Y Wern Community Primary School crowned best breakfast club in Wales

A Wrexham primary school has been crowned the best club in Wales in the annual Kellogg’s breakfast club awards.  Hafod Y Wern Community Primary School on Deva Way was voted by a panel of judges as the best breakfast club in Wales.  The school has received a cash prize of £1,000 to spend on improving its breakfast club. Pupils and breakfast club leaders will attend a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament in March to collect their award alongside MP’s.

Kellogg’s panel of judges selected winners based on the people and activities that transform the mornings of children across the UK. From inspirational volunteers to unique educational sessions, the competition was tough.  This breakfast club offers a fun and caring atmosphere for the students of Hafod Y Wern Community Primary School with a range of healthy options to start the day. This breakfast club has had a huge impact as both children and parents that need support are able to attend.

Breakfast club leader, Beryl Watson said: “We are delighted and incredibly proud to have won the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards.

“Children are much calmer when they enter the classroom as they have had time to talk through any problems that may be affecting them day to day.”

After breakfast the children can participate in a daily morning walk challenge around the school grounds to encourage fitness.

The school will spend its winnings on shiny new equipment as some of it is now old and worn out. They also want to get more games for older pupils so they can enjoy the breakfast club too.  Chris Silcock, VP and chief of Kellogg’s UK & Ireland, said: “I have had the opportunity to see the amazing work breakfast clubs do first hand. Now, more than ever, breakfast clubs offer a lifeline for so many families. They support working parents, feed hungry children and offer informal social and academic learning opportunities.

The breakfast club awards is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the incredible and vital these clubs make across the UK. I look forward to congratulating the pupils and breakfast club leaders at the award ceremony.”  In 2019 Kellogg’s donated £650,000 to breakfast clubs. It is celebrating 21 years of supporting breakfast clubs – offering funding, food and training to 3,000 clubs across the UK
